Cookie policy (EU)
Exactly which cookies this site sets, what for, and how long they stay. No categories full of small print: the whole list fits on this page.
New for you
Not read yet since you were here
The site keeps an anonymous record of which pages you opened; this is the newest that was not among them.
The short version
This site sets a handful of functional cookies to work – among them the anonymous profile that lets the site adapt to you – and it may set those without consent. Statistics (Google Analytics) are only measured after you say yes; until then the measuring code is not even loaded. We use no marketing or tracking cookies. This policy was last updated on 30 August 2026 and applies to visitors from the European Economic Area and Switzerland.
What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small file sent along with pages of this site and kept by your browser. On a next visit your browser sends it back, so the site can remember your choices. Scripts are pieces of program code that make the site work; they run on our server or in your browser and are not cookies. This site uses no web beacons or comparable tracking techniques.
Functional cookies: the ones the site sets itself
Functional cookies are needed to make the site work and to remember your choices; the law requires no consent for those. These are all of them – there is no longer list somewhere else.
- sbaAdaptiveVisitor
- A random number under which the site anonymously remembers which subjects you read here, so order, accent and explanation adapt to you. No name, no e-mail address, no IP address. Retention: at most 365 days. View and erase it on the profile page.
- sbathemeWelcome
- Remembers that you saw the welcome and which way you chose, so the site does not ask you the same thing every time.
- sbathemeBrowserNote
- Remembers that you dismissed the note about an outdated browser, so it does not come back. Retention: 180 days.
- sbathemeConsentAnalytics
- Remembers your answer to the statistics question (yes or no), so we do not have to ask again. Retention: 180 days.
- sbathemeConverseMode
- Remembers whether you prefer to use the site in conversation mode, so that mode returns on the next page. Retention: 365 days.
- sbathemeVisitorName and sbathemeVisitorEmail
- Only when you choose to chat with a colleague in the conversation and enter your name and email address for it: they are kept so we do not ask again next time. You enter them yourself; the site guesses nothing. Retention: 365 days.
Statistics: only after your yes
To improve the site we would like to know how it is used. For that we use Google Analytics – but only after you agree through the question at the foot of your screen. Until that moment Google’s measuring code is not loaded and no Google cookie sits on your device. If you agree, Google Analytics sets its own cookies (names starting with _ga, with a lifetime of up to two years). We have not permitted Google to use that information for its own services or advertising.
Change your choice here:
You have not made a choice yet; the question appears as soon as there is something to measure.
Videos from Vimeo and YouTube
Videos on this site are hosted at Vimeo and YouTube. We load them in their privacy-friendly mode: Vimeo with Do Not Track, YouTube through the cookie-free domain. Viewing a page with video therefore sets no tracking cookies. Only when you click through to the platform yourself do that platform’s terms apply.
For completeness: the Vimeo player does set one technical cookie (__cf_bm) from Cloudflare, the party protecting their traffic. It exists to recognise automated traffic, does not follow you, and expires within half an hour. If your browser blocks third-party cookies, the video keeps working.
What we do not set
No marketing or tracking cookies, no advertising networks, no social media pixels from LinkedIn, Meta or Microsoft, no session recordings. Should that “no” ever disappear, you will read it in this policy first and we will ask consent for it anew.
You can always delete cookies yourself through your browser settings; consult your browser’s help section. Note: delete the functional cookies too and the site loses your choices and starts over for you.
Your rights and contact
Everything about your rights around personal data – access, correction, erasure, objection, transfer and withdrawing consent – is in our privacy statement.
