What are IP addresses and how do they work?

This post is also available in: Nederlands (Dutch)

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

An IP address is the address of a device on a network. IPv4 uses four number groups and is running out of addresses; IPv6 is the newer standard with a practically unlimited address space.

What does this mean for you?

For most users the transition happens invisibly, but for business networks a good configuration matters — for security and reachability alike.
